This letter from the Bhopal SSP to all police station heads is clear, ordering the police to gather details regarding population, work profile, source of funding & criminal activities of the community. Similar letters have been forwarded by SPs to police stations under their jurisdiction.
Father Anand Mutundgal, Spokesman of Bhopal Diocese said, "If you look at the information that they are gathering, you realize there is some agenda. They are gathering information regarding funding. This could have easily been obtained from the registrar firms and societies, population details could have been gathered from the census department."
After members of the Christian community approached the state DGP, the police seemingly executed a U-turn, saying they didnt know how the order was first issued.
"Neither the State Government, nor the State Police wishes to profile the community. How this has happened is being looked into," said AK Soni, IG Intelligence.
BJP-led state governments have had a dubious track record against Christians in recent times, with attacks on the community in Orissa, Karnataka and even Madhya Pradesh in recent years. Seen in this context, this latest letter from the police ordering religious profiling is all the more chilling.
