MP Shahabuddin guilty of murder

Patna: A local court on Saturday held controversial Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammad Shahabuddin guilty for the kidnapping and murder a CPI-ML activist, Chhote Lal, in 2004.

Additional District and Sessions judge Gyaneshwar Prasad Srivastava pronounced Shahabuddin guilty under Section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

The quantum of sentence will be announced on May 8. The case relates to the kidnapping of Gupta by Shahabuddin and his men on February 7, 1999.

This is the second time the controversial MP has been convicted in a criminal case. In March, a special court in Siwan had awarded two years' imprisonment to Shahabuddin for assaulting a Communist Party India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) worker in 1998.

Shahabuddin has been facing some 34 cases, including those of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and violation of the Foreign Exchange Act and the Arms Act.

Earlier last month, the Bihar Government had stripped the incarcerated MP of special treatment in jail as a VIP prisoner. The government issued orders to stop giving him facilities meant for divisional prisoners. Shahabuddin has since been entitled only to amenities given to common prisoners.

The government decision came after Siwan District Magistrate SK Mall gave a report in which he held Shahabuddin responsible for the violent clash inside the prison in March between two groups of inmates. Nearly a dozen prisoners were injured in the clash. After that the authorities shifted them to other jails.

Following the order, Shahabuddin is no more getting any extra bed, cook, newspapers, magazine and food cooked outside prison.

However, he continues to enjoy medical facilities as before.
