Villager hacked to death over water dispute

Sagar (Bhopal): It’s a fight for survival in Madhya Pradesh as the state faces an acute water shortage. A villager was last Tuesday hacked to death for refusing water from his well to a fellow villager.

Forty five-year-old Bhallu Rajak was a resident of the Mudkhera village, which is home to 2000 people. Almost all sources of water in the village have dried up and Rajak's well was one amongst the five that provided water to the entire village.

On April 29, Vitthal Thakur — a resident of the same village — wanted to draw more water than his daily quota. When Rajak objected to that, Thakur allegedly hacked him to death in a bout of rage.

"There is no water in the village. Bhallu tried to stop Vitthal Thakur from drawing more water from his well," a village elder, Manved Singh, said.

Police have registered a murder case and the accused has been arrested.

"Bhallu most probably asked Thakur to take the minimum possible water but he needed more. When he was stopped, he attacked Bhallu with an axe and killed him on the spot," Sub Inspector VK Sharma said.

Mudkhera is not the only village facing water crisis. The entire state of Madhya Pradesh is caught in the midst of an acute water shortage leading to violent protests in some areas.

Reports suggest a steep fall in ground water levels across the state and in many places like Madkhera, people are now contemplating mass migration.
