New Delhi: Namrata and Priya Dutt, daughters of late actors Sunil and Nargis Dutt, have compiled a memoir of their parents - Mr and Mrs Dutt: Memories of our Parents.
The book, an ode to Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, contains pictures from their family album, handwritten letters and lesser-known facts about their parents.
Edited by Nasreen Munni Kabeer, Mr and Mrs. Dutt: Memories of our Parents will be launched in the capital on September 28.
Priya and Namrata talked more about the experience on CNN-IBN’s India at 9.
CNN-IBN: Welcome to India at 9. It's been a really rough year for you all. Your brother Sanjay has been in and out of jail and now faces tough prison sentences. Anything to do with the timing of your book?
Priya: No, not really. The timing suited all of us. As you know I am in my advanced stage of pregnancy and will not be able to do anything after October. We thought this was the right time. The book was ready and we didn’t want to waste too much time releasing it. So we found a suitable date for that.
CNN-IBN: What would you say is special about the book?
Namrata: What’s special is that it's from us - the three of us. It's our personal memories and not from a third party.
CNN-IBN: You've been pretty candid in the book as well.
Namrata: Yes...
CNN-IBN: Would like you to open page 61. I was randomly flipping through and realised the account you have given on this page is so special. We all feel that these are stars and you are children of stars.
Priya: (reads out the excerpt) Mom gave up anything that might have come in the way of children. A producer came one day with a blank cheque asking her to act in his film. She laughed and sent him away saying she was currently working in three films - Sanju, Anju and Priya.
CNN-IBN: Let’s come back to the current problems. You've been at the forfront fighting for Sanjay. Many would say that at this time, a lot of publicity of your book is about political support for Sanjay.
Priya: No, I wouldn't say that. We had organised and planned the book right after my father's death. So it has nothing to do with politics. It's a very personalised memoir about our parents by the three of us. When you go through the book, you'd know there's nothing political about it.
CNN-IBN: The letters, particularly, must have been tough to read.
Priya: Very. They brought back so many memories. You push so much behind you as you go on in life.
CNN-IBN: Tomorrow is Sept 27, Judge Kode is expected to pass on the details of Sanjay's sentencing. What do you know of that?
Priya: We don’t know yet. We aren’t too sure.
