MS University wears saffron colour

Vadodara: Controversies don't end at the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara, it seems. The deans of other faculties have endorsed the suspension of fine arts dean Shivaraj Panikkar. But the students are not taking to it too kindly.

Vacation days are on for fine art students of the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara. But after the Sangh Parivar's outcry over nude paintings by a student, they have chosen to stay back.

Over the last three weeks, they have seen their dean Shivaraj Panikkar, who was with them through thick and thin, suspended, and goons have stormed the campus at least twice. The students say all this is evidence enough to prove saffronisation of the MSU.

"Mr Manoj Soni, the VC, is acting like a feudal lord. He must realise that he is the VC of an educational institution and not that of a company," said Human Righs Activist Rohit Prajapati.

In a shock to the students, the deans of other faculties of the university met a couple of days ago and endorsed the suspension of Shivaraj Panikkar for three months. A new dean has also been appointed.

"Things cannot be left to the whims and fancies of an individual or a group. Whatever action has been taken by the university, has been endorsed by the deans of the faculties in the MSU," said Fine Arts Faculty and HOD Management Faculty OSD G C Maheshwari.

That heads of various departments of the MSU have declared that the fine arts paintings are obscene, is testimony to the fact that saffronisation of this prestigious university is now complete.
