Mufti vs Azad: J-K battleground gears up for poll fight

Srinagar: It's the penultimate phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir and caught in the political fray are the two former Chief Ministers Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Mufti, the patron of People's Democratic Party, is contesting from Anantnag and banking on self-governance, shared sovereignty and resolution of Kashmir to voters.

“Kashmir resolution is my priority, you can see the opening of more road links,” he says.

Azad, whose government was pulled down by PDP over the Amarnath land crisis, is fighting from Bhaderwah and still nurses the wound. He does not see eye to eye with the Muftis and ensures that he mentions them at least once in his election rallies.

“Both NC and PDP pulled down my government. There is a saying shal shal bun bun tunge wise kune (when it comers to crunch, jackals howl together),” he says.

But in politics, nothing is permanent and it takes no time for equations to change. Sources say the Congress high command has still kept options open about choosing a partner in case there is a fractured mandate. Mufti when asked about a possible alliance with the Congress said, “Politics is the art of possible, anything can happen”.

A likelihood of a hung Assembly looming large, the friends-turned-foes may sink their difference and join hand to form the next government, thereby keeping their common adversary the national conference at bay.
