Saifai and Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: A day after the political battle in Uttar Pradesh turned violent, the situation in Mulayam Singh's pocket borough Saifai fared no better, as a police station was attacked by locals.

The attack came barely 24 hours after Mulayam’s son and brother were roughed up by cops in Lucknow.

It now appears that the state is under control, but for these parts, one reason why Mayawati was quick to lay the entire blame for Wednesday’s violence on Mulayam and his men.

Samajwadi party leader Amar singh was vehement in laying the blame on Mayawati.

“She (Mayawati) is the new and latest mafia queen of Indian politics,” he exclaimed, adding, “According to me, this mafia queen and her bullets should be taken care of.”

Amar Singh pointed out, “Mayawati also has goons. What she has done is shocking and the culprits must be brought to book immediately."

Mulayam and Maya are now engaged in a war of words, accusing each other of conspiring to eliminate the rival.

But most importantly, the majority of those arrested on Wednesday are known to have a long criminal record and all are members of Lucknow University Students Union and ardent supporters of Mulayam:

  • Ram Singh Rana: 15 cases against him, including attempt to murder
  • Manish Yadav: Nine criminal cases, including attempt to murder and possession of drugs
  • Rajesh Yadav: Six criminal cases against him and he has been charged with murder, too
  • Satish Kumar Yadav: Five criminal cases against him and he is a murder suspect, as well
  • The violence in Saifai is an opportunity for Mulayam Singh Yadav to hit out at Mayawati with the same stick which she had used to beat him with – law and order, which traditionally has always been a problem in these parts of Uttar Pradesh.

It’s a test for Mayawati too, who claims that there is no space for any hooliganism in Maya's raj.
