New Delhi: As political parties try to outdo one another in offering sops in Uttar Pradesh elections, Mulayam Singh Yadav first promised free laptops and tablets to students if Samajwadi Party comes to power in UP. Going a step further, he has announced free saris and blankets for the needy, and if that was not enough, the Samajwadi Party supremo has also said his government will give jobs to rape victims.
"Investigations will be ordered against the murderers and rapists and they will be sent to jail. We will help the rape victims and will give them jobs," said Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Over the last one year, the Opposition has attacked the Mayawati government on the law and order front, after a series of crimes against women were reported across the state. But what Mulayam Singh now promises, his adversaries say, shows his insensitivity towards victims of violent crimes, especially women.
"This is a sad statement by Mulayam," said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu SInghvi.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) also wants the Election Commission to intervene.
"EC should take action against Mulayam Singh Yadav," said NCW Chairperson Mamta sharma.
Mulayam Singh in this year's elections has assiduously worked on an image makeover. Projecting his son Akhilesh, he trying to break free from the past by pushing the development agenda, in the process, at times even crossing the thin line and making politically incorrect announcements.
