New Delhi: The Congress has criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh's statements against the Election Commission (EC).
The party on Friday that Mulayam was desperate to win and also extremely scared of losing the upcoming elections.
Mulayam had accused the EC of acting under the Centre's influence in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN.
Terming the Samajwadi Party attack on the Election Commission as "intemperate" and "an act of indesperation", Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told news agency PTI that Yadav was already looking for "lame excuses and advance alibis in the face of certain defeat."
"We may not agree with the steps taken by the EC but that does not mean that we criticise a Constitutional authority," he was further quoted as saying.
The EC’s overhaul exercise in the poll-bound Uttar Pradesh was what had invited CM Mulayam Singh Yadav’s ire.
After EC transferred top police officials and bureaucrats in UP - including chief secretary and many SSPs - Mulayam accused the body of acting under the influence of the Central Government.
In an exclusive conversation with CNN-IBN's editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Mulayam had said, "Election Commission is a constitutional body, so I won’t say anything now, but after the elections I will tell the country the truth. As of now, I just want to request the Commission not to run a parallel government."
Mulayam also said that Congress had made it a policy to appoint its own men as governors all across the country.
