Mullaperiyar: Action after IIT Roorkee report

KOCHI: The disaster management measures to be adopted in the district in case of a Mullaperiyar disaster will be decided based on the impact-assessment report being prepared by IIT Roorkee. A decision to this effect was taken at the District Development Council meeting held in Kochi on Saturday.
A high-level meeting of all the departments concerned will be held as soon as the report is ready. The university has already prepared such a report for Idukki.
The council also demanded that the government and the Southern Railway take immediate steps to resolve the issues pertaining to the land acquisition for the Angamaly-Sabari railway line project. Jose Thettayil MLA presented a resolution stating that the funds allocated for the project under the Railway Budget should be utilised properly.
There were delays in the compensations given to the people who had surrendered their land for the project, he noted MLAs stated that certain decisions that need to be taken in the meetings were being shelved owing to the absence of the officials concerned.
They demanded that measures be taken to ensure that the heads of all district-level institutions participate in all the council meetings and that all decisions regarding developmental programmes be conveyed to the people’s representatives so that they can adopt the necessary steps. District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth assured them that proper steps will be taken in this regard.
