Mumbai: In a daring robbery at the Mumbai International airport, a group of gunmen struck at the Air India cargo killing the guard and making good with gold and silver coins worth over Rs 35 lakh, weighing nearly 150 kg.
The police claim to have identified four of the attackers but no arrests have been made.
The incident occurred happened around 1130 hrs IST when officials of Natural Refineries were booking six parcels of gold and silver coins weighing 145 kg.
Three armed masked men reportedly came into the booking area and hit the cargo official on his head with a gun.
They then reportedly escaped in a Tata Indica car with coins weighing about 95 kg.
Security guard Bhonsle who tried to stop them severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital he was taken to.
An eyewitness, Dileep Borkar, recalls the incident. "He hit me on the head and I collapsed,” he says.
Investigations are on but the police only have a partial license plate number to go ahead with.
