Mumbai: A Pakistani terrorist - Mohammad Ali - was killed and his aide - Mohammad Riyaz Nawabuddin - injured in an early morning shootout at Mumbai's Antop Hill area on Tuesday.
The Anti-Terrorism Squad on a tip off arrested Nawabuddin on Monday night, police said adding the team then went to the Central Government Scheme (CGS) colony in the Antop Hill area to apprehend his colleague who opened fire at them.
The ATS team fired in retaliation in which the second Pakistani suspect, identified as Mohammed Ali alias Abu Osama, was killed.
Riyaz Nawabuddin will be produced in court later on Tuesday, police said.
The ATS Police recovered an AK-47 and 2.5 kgs of RDX from the site of the encounter.
The encounter took place at around 0430 hours IST, Additional Commissioner of Police, ATS, Jaijeet Singh said.
Asked if the encounter was linked to the July 11 serial train blasts in Mumbai, which had killed around 200 and injured over 700 persons, Singh declined to comment.
The city has already been on high alert ahead of the great Ganpati festival after July 11 blasts.
Addressing a press conference Police Commissioner of Mumbai A N Roy said that according to their information terrorists have been coming to the city to carry out more attacks.
He added that ammunition and money have been recovered from the arrested person and the one who was killed.
"It was revealed after investigations that they were from Pakistan and one of them was staying in India," Roy said.
The name of the organisation that the terrorists belong to is still not clear. However, the recovery of maps, detonators, explosives, money etc makes it clear that they had intended a strike.
