Mumbai: Autorickshaw driver's daughter who topped CA exam gives credit to parents

Mumbai: Prema Jayakumar, the daughter of a Mumbai autorickshaw driver, has topped the All India Chartered Accountancy examination. 24-year old Prema aced the exam with a score of 607 out of 800, a solid 75.88 per cent, and attributed her success to support from her parents and teachers.

She also said that studying in a 300 sq-ft room in a chawl might have been a bit stifling, but it never proved a deterrent. "The former president of the CA Institute called me and said I'd topped the exam. I cried so much out of joy. I've never been happier. My father, mother & brother have encouraged me a lot. Credit goes to them for creating an environment where I could concentrate on my studies without any distractions," Prema said.

What's more is that even her brother has cleared the exam, both in their first attempts. Her father Jayakumar Perumal has been an auto driver for years, earning just about Rs 15,000 per month while her mother worked as house help.

"I have always encouraged her to study whatever she liked. Credit goes to my daughter for her hard work. Throughout her life she has always topped her exams," Prema's father said.

Both siblings had registered together with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to take the test in November 2012. Displaying academic excellence earlier too, Prema had stood second in her B Com Third year examination conducted by Mumbai University, securing 90 per cent marks.
