Mumbai: Life in Mumbai's Northwestern suburbs crawled back to normal after 55 hours of being virtually cut off from the suburban train network following a railway block for repair work.
More than 50 per cent of local train traffic in the Borivali-Viral stretch was suspended for repairs as part of the Rs 504-crore track-quadrupling project.
In spite of the trouble that the 55-hour-long block created, the average Mumbaikar from the Western suburbs is not complaining primarily because it now means more trains that are faster along with additional platforms.
And the surprise element of this overhaul has been the rates of property beyond Borivali, which have already witnessed a mild appreciation.
So, here's what Mumbaikars can look forward to:
- An additional eight-nine trains in the immediate future.
- More shuttles from Virar to places like Bandra, Andheri and Borivali.
- Additional platforms.
- Separate tracks for long-distance trains and therefore faster locals.
“This repair work will make for easier travel,” a commuter, Dr Geeta Yadav said.
An indirect fallout of the project is the reduction in the property price gap between Borivali and Mira Road that are a mere 15-minute drive from each other.
"Borivali currently commands Rs 5,000-6,000 per square foot while in Mira Road it is between Rs 2,000-3,000 per square foot but property prices are all set to soar,” Pawan Aggarwal from Mumbai-based Mittal Properties said.
