Click to play videoMumbai: A 24-year-old businessman who was injured in the Zaveri Bazar died in hospital on Friday, taking the toll to 19 in the Mumbai serial Blasts. Doctors, who tried to save Nikhil Damka and 130 others injured, have been working tirelessly since that fatal evening.
"The sight was gruesome. You can't describe even though the doctors are used to seeing gruesome sights, this can't be put to words," Doctor Rajesh R Sharma, Intensivist, HN Hospital said.
Chaos, mounting injuries and the race against time to save people, scenes that are now all too familiar at Mumbai hospitals. Yet 13th July, 2011 is a date Doctor Joshi will never forget, for he had to amputate the limbs of five people.
"The Corridors were full of blood. We were walking in blood and there was blood on the walls. Patients were so much in shock, that we were giving injections without local anaesthetic, and they didn't feel any pain," Doctor Arun P Doshi, Surgeon, HN Hospital said.
Doctor Abhidha H Shah, Neurosurgeon, KEM Hospital was dealing with one of the most challenging cases of her career. Makeshwar Vishakarama had been brought in with his brains literally hanging out after the blast at Zaveri bazar blast.
"You can't be stressed at that moment, the adrenaline rush was so high, that we were just thinking how to treat this patient, how to save him," Shah said.
As they went about saving life after life, several doctors, nurses and hospital staff worked non-stop, in some cases for 36 hours.
"We didn't have the time to call home and inform them. Friends and family were calling because being in that area, they were worried about me but couldn't answer my phone at 2 am when I checked, their were 15missed calls," Doctor Rajesh R Sharma, Intensivist, HN Hospital said
After a terrorist attack, we talk about the number of dead, the number of injured and move on with discussions on the investigations of the case. Rarely do we stop and salute the men who wrestle against time and make all the difference between life and death. So take a minute and salute, all the unsung heroes who are helping the city, move on.
