Mumbai: It's a difficult time for Mumbaikars as well, living as they do in a city of extremes. First floods and now a hundred percent cut in water supply.
The 24 hour-long 100 per cent water supply cut will begin from 1000 hrs, IST on December 27 for Mumbaikars because the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be adding new water pipelines to its existing system.
This will add 200-million litre water per day to the city's existing supply of 3,150 million liters.
The eastern and southern parts of Mumbai will be the most affected by the water cut.
The BMC has sent advisories asking people to start storing water. It has also told the disaster management cell to handle queries.
Though the new system seems like a well-timed New Year gift, it's only by January end that the city will start receiving the extra supply of water.
What can't be denied though is the timing of this move for the BMC elections happen early 2007. But that doesn't make life any easier for these slum dwellers in D'lyle Road, a stronghold of the Shiv Sena that runs the BMC.
Slum dweller Rabhasray Yadav says, “We get water only at 0400 hrs, IST everyday. In any case we face a crisis the year round.”
There are many though who are waiting to cash in on this 24-hour water cut. Like water tanker wallahs.
Tanker owners association president Daljit Singh Bal says, “We anticipate 35-40 per cent increase in demand and we are getting prepare for it.”
The average Mumbaikar on the other hand is hoping that this one-day's trouble will lead to a better and regular water supply in the coming year.
