Mumbai builders jump into poll fray

Mumbai: A number of high profile builders are in the fray for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.

In fact half the constituencies in Mumbai have builders contesting under the banner of various political parties.

The Maximum city is dominated by high rise building symbolising the money power of real estate. Now it seems their builders are building a future in politics too as the builder-politician nexus now seems to be merging into one.

In fact there are builders in the fray in 30 of the 60 Assembly constituencies in Mumbai.

While the Congress has roped in 13 builders to contest Assembly elections; Bharatiya Janata Party has 10 builders on its list.

The other parties aren't far behind.

Nationalist Congress Party has fielded six builders while Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena have fielded five each.

Moreover, some of them are among the richest people in Mumbai.

With rapid urbanisation over the last 10 years, the monopoly of the sugar co-operatives in Mumbai politics has given way to the control of real estate barons.

Small wonder then, that for many years, the chief ministers of Maharashtra have held only one portfolio that of urban development.
