Mumbai: A building in Mumbai collapsed on Tuesday night trapping eight people inside the debris. One 83-year-old woman died. Angry residents say the authorities ignored their warnings of the danger posed by illegal construction.
The 70-year-old Khatau Mansion on the busy Lamington Road in the South Central region of the city caved in. The facade of the five-storey building came crashing down in the evening, trapping nearly 10 people under the debris. Fire brigade vehicles and ambulances rushed to the spot and managed to rescue eight of those trapped. One of the survivors sustained injuries and was rushed to the nearby hospital.
Miraculously, a four-month-old survived the crash and so did the baby's mother.
The residents say they saw the tragedy coming, as an electronic shop on the ground floor of the building had allegedly displaced key pillars during an illegal construction. They allege that this is a structural change that the authorities had ignored.
The electronic shop owners removed the pillars at the bottom to build illegally, said an angry resident.
