Mumbai: A Mumbai court on Wednesday sent businessman Jay Upadhyaya to prison for 180 days for drunken driving. His license, too, was cancelled permanently.
It is the harshest sentence for drunken driving in Mumbai.
Upadhyaya, who deals in real estate, was caught drinking and driving for the second time.
In Mumbai, more than 650 people died in road accidents last year and police launched a special drive against drinking and driving.
By the end of 2007, police registered 12,000 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the police 70 per cent of car crashes in Mumbai involve drivers between 20 and 40 years of age and instances of youngsters involved in drunken driving has worsened the situation.
