Mumbai chokes on Diwali smoke
Mumbai: Breathing is something that comes so naturally to us that we are barely aware of it. However, the morning after Diwali, the jogging and morning walk community of Nariman point is struggling to catch it's breath.
Says a morning walker, Nutan, "I have been coughing for a few days now, but today my cough has increased."
Says another morning walker, Madan Mohan Desai, "I am a heart patient and a morning walk is a must and I have been going on a walk for the past 45 years. But this year the pollution has increased so much that it's difficult to go for a walk."
This is a problem hard to brush off and doctors give some hard figures to support people's arguments and complaints.
Says Viral Infections Specialist, Dr Om Srivastava, "I suspect that 30 per cent of the population in Mumbai will test for some airway problem or the other."
The problem is far more evident and pronounced in people who suffer from asthma, like 58-year-old Shubhangi Rawle. She has switched over to her own strategy to keep her problem in check.
"I prefer staying indoors," says she.
