The Mumbai Traffic Police is apparently planning to ban music in cars in the interest of safe driving. Reports also said a fine would be imposed on those who do not follow the rule.
A senior official was quoted as saying that the ban is valid under the Motor Vehicles Act and that this is necessary to prevent accidents. But other police officials have claimed that wrong orders were issued and that no such ban is in the offing.
The news has spread like wild fire in Mumbai with most radio channels in the city running campaigns to revoke the order.
Research shows music can play a positive role in avoiding road rage and anger in cities like Mumbai, which are constantly plagued by traffic jams.
However, many other experts believe that drivers who listen to fast music may have more than twice as many accidents as those listening to slower tracks.
In fact, many are asking how many accidents have taken place because of playing music in the car. This is because in case of drunken driving statistics are available but none are available as far as this rule is concerned.
With arguments both for and against the rule, it seems the police will have to do a rethink before the order is put into practice.
