Mumbai: The Mumbai Police on Wednesday said they would take suo motu action against New Year party revellers who molested a young woman at the Gateway of India on December 31.

Mumbaikars were shocked when photographs of the woman being molested appeared in a city tabloid. Police till late Wednesday evening had claimed that they could order a probe only if somebody filed a complaint.

“I appeal to the general public to come forward if they have any information about the incident or the miscreants as no formal complaint has been registered with us," Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy said.

"We will take suo motu action in the incident based upon the photographs as no litigants are available," he was quoted by PTI as saying.

Two police constables and media persons, who were standing at a watchtower near the gateway, will be questioned.

The woman and his male companion were harassed by a group of some 70 men. The couple has not approached the police.
