Mumbai: After Paris J’taime , it's Mumbai's turn to be the centerpiece of a new portmanteau film.
Eleven directors, eleven stories and one city - in short, that is what Mumbai Cutting is all about.
The series of short films brings together veterans like Kundan Shah, Sudhir Mishra, Jahnu Barua, Rituparno Ghosh and Revathy with young guns like Manish Jha, Ruchi Narain, Ayush Raina with critically acclaimed filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Rahul Dholakia and Shashank Ghosh.
Interestingly most of the filmmakers are outsiders or as filmmaker Shashank calls himself 'a refugee' in the city.
“A refugee, or anyone from outside Mumbai, see this place with a lot more clarity than someone from here. I used to do the same in Channel V. I would get Englishmen and Americans to come down and see what was under our noses, which we could not see. So, an outsider sees Bombay at its simplest level with a lot of clarity,” says filmmaker Shashank Ghosh.
The stories range from comical to cynical, featuring actors like Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak, Jimmy Shergill, Soha Ali Khan, Sonali Kulkrani, Raima Sen and Deepak Dobriyal in lead roles.
However, it wasn’t easy to pick up eleven stories for a city which has been explored so many times, both on the big and the small screen.
“Usually it is always projected as the city of dreams, people come and make it big here. But that’s not the story with everybody. So, the directors were briefed to get the hidden truth out and to tell a story in 10 minutes,” says producer, Mumbai Cutting, Niyati Shah.
The film's music also boasts of an ensemble of artists including Ali Azmat, Shafaqat Amanat Ali and the Pakistani band Fuzon along with Indian bands like Euphoria and Indian Ocean.
