Mumbai: The Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil on Tuesday, confirmed that top cop Ashok Deshbhratar has been suspended in connection with the Hasan Ali probe.

Patil informed the House that Deshbhratar asked for Rs 1 crore from Ali's associate Yusuf Lakdawala to provide proper facilities to Ali, while he was in police custody.

The senior IPS officer allegedly carried out a "sting operation" on Hasan Ali Khan. The alleged suspension also created a ruckus in the State Assembly.

Deshbhratar, who was currently posted as DCP railways, is under the scanner for recording the interrogation of Hasan Ali on spy cam. This recording was leaked to the media, subsequently embarrassing the Maharashtra state government.

A preliminary inquiry by the CID concluded that the sting operation CD leaked to the media was doctored.

Reports indicate this recording of Ali's interrogation contains the names of several NCP and Congress politicians and a former Mumbai police commissioner.

However, senior police officials are keeping mum and have refused to comment on the suspension on Monday.

A few days ago, he had apparently written to the Chief Secretary, seeking permission to intervene in the on-going matters in sessions court.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed a breakthrough in the case.

The Supreme Court had on Monday granted three days of additional custodial interrogation to the ED of Pune stud farm owner Hasan Ali Khan allegedly involved in money laundering activities.
