Dhule: Kosi waters in Bihar washed away many homes and lives, and now they have also proved fatal for those who went to extend a helping hand.
Chandrakant Patil, a 25-year-old resident doctor at the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai went to Bihar with a group of doctors to give medical aid to the victims but tragically he died after lightning struck him at a relief camp.
It is a shock his friends are yet to come to terms with it.
“He was such a friendly person, always ready to help. It is a huge loss for me,” says Chandrakant’s roommate Dr Narendra Patil.
The shock and grief of the family also involves a lot of worry as Chandrakant was family’s main financial support.
His father is a mill worker in Dhule and his younger sister is still studying.
“His family really depended on him. I hope the government steps in to help them out,” says Chandrakant’s friend Dr Anil Dudhbhate.
Chandrakant's sacrifice was no less than a soldier’s sacrifice.
“He died while serving the country,” says Chandrakant’s grandfather B D Patil.
The State Association for Resident Doctors has appealed to Bihar and Maharashtra state governments to provide financial help to Patil’s family.
