Mumbai: After ten days of venerating the elephant god, Mumbai's Ganeshotsav revelleries will draw to their climax on Sunday when the Ganesha idols will be immersed in the sea, the biggest festival on the day of Anant Chaturdashi.
More than 30 lakh Mumbaikars are expected to participate in the festivities on Sunday.
The police force faces a daunting task to provide security for this occasion. However, they say that they are up for it.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic S.S.Solunke say, "We have made adequate preparations."
With the Visarjan falling on Sunday, traffic will not be a nightmare for commuters. However, the traffic police is still taking no chances.
Many major roads in the city, like the SVP road to Girgaum chowpatty, Tillak bridge at Dadar T T, LBS Marg and Juhu Tara road will be largely closed for traffic.
At least 81 CCTV cameras have been put up across the city to observe movement of traffic and the Ganpati processions.
People coming to immerse domestic ganpatis have been asked to come during the day between 12 and 6 pm, to avoid overcrowding.
Keeping the terror threat in mind, bursting of firecrackers at the immersion sites has been disallowed for the first time this year.
All the police manpower has been deployed to implement these guidelines.
Joint Commissioner, Law and Order K.L.Prasad says, “No one in the police force has got an off this week, all the officers are on duty.”
