Mumbai eve-teasing accused says sorry

Mumbai: The trauma of being eve-teased and grievously injured has not yet ended for 10-year-old Asma.

Asma will have to spend another agonising month-and-a-half in the hospital and maybe go through a third surgery, all because she happened to get in to the way of boys who were eve-teasing her sister.

The girl was returning home from tuition classes with her sister, when some boys in an SUV started following them and eve-teasing.

Her sister moved back so as to let the boys pass, but they came so close that Asma's skirt got entangled in the wheel and she was dragged along with the car. Her hand came under the wheel of the car.

However, despite the fact that they have been accused of this, the boys have been set free for 14 days on bail and now plead forgiveness.

Says the driver of the car, 22-year-old Mahendra Kamble, "Main mafi mangta hoon. Mujhse galti hui hai lekin maine eve-teasing nahi ki hai. (I'm sorry, I've committed a mistake, but I did not eve-tease.)"

It all went out of control when Kamble decided to give himself driving lessons in an SUV, which belonged to his friend, 19-year-old Ajay Manjrekar's uncle.

"Maine apne maami se chaabi li thi ki gadi dhone jaaonga aur phir uske baad main friends se mila aur unhone bola ki hum gadi ghumane le jayenge. (I took the car keys from my aunt saying I would wash the car for her. Then I met my friends and we all decided to go for a spin)," says Ajay Manjrekar.

The boys say that while Kamble was trying his hand at the wheel, a hand cart came in front of the car and a Qualis from the opposite direction. Kamble swerved in panic and hit the accelerator instead of the brake, ending up with Asma under the wheel, dragging her for several meters before the vehicle stopped.

However, this does not match with what Asma's sister Sana says -- that the boys, seven of the them piled into the car, chased the girls in the car making lewd remarks and then purposely swerved towards them.

However, signs of Asma's struggle can still be seen on the car, that Ajay's uncle -- Rajendra Ankush Parkar -- claims was taken without his consent.

"Mujhe kuch pata hi nahin tha ki yeh meri gaadi le kar gaye the (I was unaware that they had taken my car)," says Parkar.

The boys deny they were harassing the girls and it took the police four days to file eve teasing charges.

Says Senior Police Inspector, Chembur Police Station, B D Pachundkar, "We pressed eve-teasing charges only after we took the girl's statement on 18 July."

And it is because of the negligence of the police that the accused are now out on bail, and have only been charged with rash and negligent driving.
