Mumbai: The petrol price hike has sent alarm bells ringing in the mind of the car owner and its not just the petrol, but many other factors conspire to make Mumbai an expensive city to own a car in.
A Baleno VXI costs Rs 6,570,00, but in Mumbai, add the Government's octroi, and the price is just over Rs 7,000,00.
Then comes the registration, which costs Rs 32,000 in Delhi but Rs 47,000 in Mumbai.
This essentially means that when the car is on the roads of Mumbai, its Rs 57,000 more expensive.

Chairman of Western India Automobile Association (WIAA), Nitin Dossa says, “Octroi tax and road tax is one of the highest in Mumbai. It will be so expensive for anyone to own a car here. What next, would we also have to pay for walking on the streets?”
To add to it, if you are a corporate planning to register the car under your company's name, you'll have to shell out an additional amount as corporate registration tax, something that could even be as much as Rs 1,05,000 for a Rs 5,00,000 car.
Not to forget the fuel, for a litre of petrol now costs Rs 47.51 in New Delhi.
But that’s a good Rs six cheaper than Mumbai, where its priced at Rs 53.50, because the Government slaps on a sales tax.
President of WIAA Deepak Kapadia says, "We had thought about a Re one-Rs two increase, not four. People can’t afford it. How can the Government do this?"
Another aspect to be considered is the mileage. For example, if a car gives an average of 10-10.5 km to a litre in Delhi, blame it on the road congestion or the road conditions, the same car in Mumbai would give an average of only eight to eight-and-a-half km.
