Mumbai: Day seven of the nationwide strike called by truckers has brought the feuding parties none the closer. But even as there's no sign of the strike being called off, Transport secretary Brahm Dutt says the situation is improving.
Assurances apart, reports from Maharashtra say householders there will feel the pinch as kitchen cabinets will soon run short of supplies.
Grain and spice supplyier unions have joined the truckers' agitations. The unions shut shop in the Vashi wholesale market and no vehicles were were allowed into Mumbai today.
The markets may have enough grain stock to tide over another week, while retailers have stocks to last just two more days.
This standoff could cause an increase in prices if the strike continues into Monday.
But vegetable and fruit sellers are staying away from the stir and have not added to the crisis. Meanwhile truckers fight losses of around 1000 rupees per truck per day. Maharashtra has a total of eight lakh trucks.
