Mumbai gets an insight on bulbs

Mumbai: The campaigners from Greenpeace in Mumbai’s BSE street conveyed a message that a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb is cheaper and environment-friendly than a GLS bulb.

While a CFL bulb costs Rs 12, the cost of a GLS bulb is close to Rs 120. A CFL bulb is four to five times more efficient with a lifespan of 7, 000 hours vis-à-vis just 1,000 hours for the GLS bulb, which means that your net spending on a GLS bulb is as high a Rs 300 and just Rs 75 for a CFL bulb.

So these could all be the reasons for Greenpeace to come out with a ‘Greenpeace guide’ to climate safe lighting.

Besides talking of the benefits of switching over to the CFL bulb, Greenpeace has named Philips as climate criminal number one for selling 649 lakh more GLS bulbs followed by its nearest competitor, Surya Roshni.

The third on the list is Bajaj Electricals, followed by Wipro, GE and Crompton Greaves, which has sold 974 lakh units.

"These companies are responsible for wasting energy and emitting high levels of carbon dioxide gasses. Thus we hold them directly responsible for climate changes. It's time someone held them responsible especially since companies like Philips are those that have the wherewithal's to bring about change,” says climate an energy expert, Greenpeace, K Srinivas.

The report also draws out various ways in which the situation could be changed and also what the companies need to change given that the companies do not think practically.

"We as corporates have to bring reality into the picture. There are 1.9 billion GLS bulbs in the country. So how is it practically possible to replace each of them so quickly? We are doing our best,” says MD and CEO, Philips Lighting, Ramachandran.

The campaigners however, drew a lot of eyeballs and managed to deliver an important message even with the guards making sure that they pack-up quickly.
