Mumbai: The race for Mumbai's top civic post is over and the city now has its first OBC woman mayor.
An Ayurvedic doctor in profession, Dr Shubha Raul hails from North Mumbai's suburban Dahisar area.
The soft-spoken Sainik has already fixed her priorities.
"The two issues that I think should be taken up are roads and garbage," said Shubha.
Armed with a strong background in social work, Shubha's grassroot connection and good rapport with senior party leaders tilted the balance in her favor.
"Women have an inherent ability to work efficiently," said Shubha.
Of the 117 seats that the BJP-Sena combine secured to lead the civic body, 45 seats have been won by women.
But then does this translate into actual powers for the city's Mayor?
BJP corporator, Vidya Thakur is all set to be Shubha's deputy in the BMC. Vidya believes women at the Mumbai Municipal corporation have been involved in civic duties for a long time but never had their say in real policy matters.
"I think the corporation should be given more powers so that they can take decisions," said Vidya.
But nonetheless for the two powerpuff women it’s the right opportunity to put forth their agenda. A show of hands in the BMC house on Saturday is all they need to get down to serious business.
