Mumbai: It is not exactly a scooty and it is not a motorcycle. And if you are tired of congested roads and polluted air, the electric bike might be an answer to your woes.
The bike is all set to make a statement on the roads of Mumbai soon. A dog-trainer, Manohar Patil zips around on his newly acquired two-wheeler with pride.
The battery-operated and easy to use electric bike is the perfect vehicle for many like Patil.
“It is very good. There is no petrol required and it doesn’t need a license too. Its speed is between 25-30 km per hr,” says Patil.
With a speed of 25 km per hour, sales for the two-wheeler is picking up across the city. And with the state transport authorities giving an exemption, there is no need for a registration and driving license.
Manufactured by the Gujarat-based Electrotherm, YO bikes as they're called, costs Rs 25,000 and have a rechargeable battery saving the worry of fuel. It is easy to manouvre and is as good as a scooty. It is also cost-effective.
With its charging time of at least six hours, E-bikes need repeated recharge for every 20 km run.
“With its medium battery capacity it cannot cope with Mumbai's traffic. It will be a hazard,” says transport commissioner, Prachi Jatania.
However, the city's roadies vouch for the multi-utility of this bike, making it a complete family vehicle.
“I find it convenient to use YO bike so I can deliver sarees to my client,” says fashion designer Payal Jain.
So while the globally electric bikes are a trend due to its eco-friendly nature, the Indian market is yet to see its successful test run.
