Mumbai: Illegal buildings face hammer

Mumbai: Dr Ashok Banushali has been making frantic calls ever since he's heard the news. He could be among the 2 lakh residents of Kalyan Dombivili who could end up without a roof if the Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation (KDMC) decides to raze buildings in this satelite township of Mumbai.

“In the last few days I have been very tense. The KDMC could even demolish this place,” says Banushali.

Over the last few years this middle-class area has spread out into an unplanned and densely populated suburb.

In 1991, there were 2,350 unauthorised structures, and the number has skyrocketed to a whopping 27,181 illegal buildings in 2006.

The growth has been fuelled by the unscrupulous builder-civic body nexus, which blatantly flouted development rules.

Though KDMC commissioner, R D Shinde, admits the court-ordered survey could actually throw up higher figures, he is attempting to downplay the impending demolitions.

“This mess has happened earlier, I agree, but now we are controlling unauthorised construction,” says Shinde.

The matter is pending in court and the question is whether the Government will regularise illegal buildings like it did for Ulhasnagar.
