Click to play videoMumbai: Commuters in western Mumbai woke up to a manic Monday as local train services in western suburbs of the city were disrupted.
At least three lakh commuters on the western suburbs of Mumbai are participating in a unique protest by boycotting local train services.
The protest – organised to coincide with World Human Rights Day – is being called against the infrequent and inadequate train services from Virar to Churchgate.
Nearly 30 lakh people travel on the Western railway line, of which over 10 lakh are between Virar and Borivali.
During peak hours 16-18 commuters are crammed into just one square metre area. Of the 1,000 daily services by local trains, only 20 per cent are on this route, when actually the population of the area has increased three-fold in the past decade.
The agitators have called for a 12-hour boycott of trains from 0600 hrs (IST) to 1800 hrs (IST). They are demanding a better frequency of trains to Virar. Several resident associations are also taking part in this protest.
