Mumbai residents clear deluge rubble

Mumbai: ‘God helps those who help themselves.’

The residents of the Parkside colony in Vilkhroli showed a die-hard spirit as they endeavoured to clear the rubble and drainage to divert the water, which flooded their houses.

"The officials are not doing anything, we did the work ourselves. A child even fell into the water when it flooded and we saved him on time. We have also strictly advised other children not to venture out," a Vikhroli resident, Jaydevi Suajmal Tiwari says.

The idea actually came in to practice when a local builder along with the government officials randomly decided to create a parallel drainage system, covering up the old one to claim that piece of land.

The result was disastrous. There was no place for the water from the hills to flow so that left the houses bring flooded by the rains.

"What else could we do? We tried knocking on many doors but all the response that we got was, ‘Where we'll come, we'll come!’ but no one came to help. We decided to do it for ourselves," another Vilhroli resident, Vijay Valmiki resident says.

While the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) emphasise that all work's done or schedule, residents like that of Vikhroli still have to battle it all by themselves.

They have to ensure that their life’s savings do not get washed away in the deluge that's set to follow.
