Mumbai: The glittering lights of Mumbai's malls and multiplexes are a symbol of the Maximum City's consumerist culture, and that of the ambition to be counted among the world's most cosmopolitan cities.
But all this shine and shimmer has not gone down too well with the cities power companies that are struggling to supply it round the clock electricity.
“I don't understand why restaurants and malls have to keep on all their lights turned on round the clock. They can turn them off and help conserve electricity,” says Deputy GM, Tata Power Co, D K Kulkarni.
This large-scale consumption of electricity even in face of a power crisis is being viewed by many Mumbaikars as wasteful. Some of them are even chipping in with helpful suggestions.
"Maybe they can cut down consumption in the afternoons on weekdays when they don't have too many shoppers,” says a resident of Mumbai.
Another resident adds, “They should try candles. They add a nice touch."
Meanwhile CNN-IBN has learnt that the government might advise large shopping complexes and malls to cut down power consumption by shutting shop for a few hours everyday.
