Mumbai: Man behind August violence at Azad Maidan arrested

Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Monday arrested the man they claim was the organiser of the violent protests at Azad Maidan in August in the Maharashtra capital. The police arrested Ahmed Raza of an NGO called Madina Tul-Ilm.

It was the Madina Tul-Ilm NGO that had organised the protest on August 11 at Azad Maidan over the communal riots in Assam which had turned violent. The Crime Branch of the Mumbai police had estimated the damages caused by the rioters at Rs 2.74 crore.

The arrest comes almost a month after the Mumbai Crime Branch on November 9 filed a 3500-page chargesheet in the case. As many as 57 accused had been charged with damage to public property and molestation.

Two people had died and at least 52 were injured, including over 40 policemen, when the rally organised to protest the alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar suddenly turned violent. Police investigation found that the riot was a pre-planned act and arrested 63 accused. Five of these were discharged and 28 others granted bail.
