Mumbai: New Year event at Mumbai's most famous landmark, the Gateway of India, is making news after it went horribly sour. Drunk revellers - nearly 70 in number - stripped and molested a woman in public view, as her friend watched helplessly.

Her male friend was also manhandled while he tried to protect her.

After ten agonising minutes of shouting and struggling, the duo managed to extricate themselves from the mob.

What Mumbai was left with was a New Year blot and a question hanging over everyone's head - was Mumbai still the safest city for women? The incident has certainly shattered many a belief.

It's been more than three days since the ghastly incident took place and even as images of the woman being publicly molested were splashed in the press, police say they have begun an investigation into the matter.

However, though the police are now saying they are ready to take suo moto action based on the Mid-Day photographs, they are not quite sure where to start.

The couple who was attacked are still untraceable, but police say, constables present on the watchtower from where the photographs were took will be questioned.

Says Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, A N Roy, "Based on the newspaper reports, we have started our investigation and are looking for information related to the matter."

Media persons also present at the event will be questioned. As for the couple in question, after their experience, it seems they find keeping a low profile much safer.
