New Delhi: The Mumbai Police has detained seven persons in connection with the molestation of two women on New Year's night outside the JW Marriott hotel in Mumbai.
Police stations across the city have been alerted and attempts are being made to identify the men who molested the NRI women—an incident that has outraged the nation.
One of the NRI women spoke to CNN-IBN on Thursday and said she and her cousin were still trying to “get over” the incident and would be very difficult for them to identify the men who had “harassed” her.
“I don’t think I would never go (out partying) in India again,” she said.
CNN-IBN: How are you doing now?
I am doing fine but I am very upset—recording (of the incident) and the twisting of facts has made it worse.
CNN-IBN: What really happened that happened
We came out of JW Marriot and were crossing the street. It was when we crossed the divider when it started. Initially I didn’t make it a big deal about it – I thought they were people just trying to harass us – but my cousin did not appreciate it. My goal was to get into an autorickshaw or a taxi but more people started gathering. My brother and my husband did everything possible to push people away. My clothes weren’t ripped and I wasn’t raped—were just harassed. A nice gentleman came and put us in the cop car and took us to the police station. [Read Story]
CNN-IBN: Two photojournalists, who took pictures of the incident, claim they called the police.
I don’t know about the camera people. I did see flashbulbs but I did not appreciate the fact that not many people helped.
CNN-IBN: Have you been approached by the police?
We did not think it would turn this big and media would constantly take it up. We just wanted to get over it. That’s why we didn’t bring it up. But when media took it up, we decided public needed to know. However, I am very upset.
Are you upset with the way the matter has been highlighted?
I am very upset. Though people need to know what happened, I don’t appreciate people making up stories. Several newspapers reported that there was a rape and my dress was ripped off, it was very upsetting. I repeat: no one was raped and my dress wasn’t ripped.
CNN-IBN: Would you be filing a complaint against the people who harassed you? Are you going to the police?
Well if could we would but there were so many people there. We don’t even know if there were five guys or three guys. Well, it was us who did not want to give any statement. [Read Story]
I don’t know if all the people were together or more public joined in later. We don’t even know how many people were present. We are looking at the pictures trying to find out who was helping us and who was not. We are also trying to figure out things with the Commissioner of Police.
CNN-IBN: Would you feel safe and confident going out to party in Mumbai or India again?
I don’t think I would never go out (partying in Mumbai or anywhere in India) again
