Mumbai: The city seems to be on the right track on at least one trend. Road accidents are down by a third this year.
In January, there were about nine accidents everyday, however, by November, the figure was down by a third and in the month of July the number plummeted by almost a 100 to 178 from the figure in January.
The dip in figures is most apparent when compared to the numbers in 2005 and 2006, while the graph normally rises towards the end of the year. The number of accidents since July 2007 has been much less as compared to other years. The cops are attributing the drop to their zero tolerance policy.
“From the start we have been asking for strict sentences and the law now provides for a six-month sentence for the first offence,” says Vijay Kamble, JT CP Traffic Mumbai.
With the police consistently using the rulebook against offenders, they now warn that a second offence could get you up to two years in jail.
However, although there are less drunken drivers on the road, one still needs to be cautioned against bad drivers.
