Mumbai: Two years after its lifeline suburban train network was targeted and amid reports of a strong Mumbai link to the Ahmedabad bombings, the Maharashtra government is taking no chances.
Maharashtra Home Minister, RR Patil convened a high level meeting with senior officials from Railways and BEST to review the security on the transport network.
The government has also decided to:
- Install CCTV cameras at 23 religious places in the state
- 40-50 CCTV cameras to be installed at three prominent government hospitals
- 42 sniffer dogs and 222 metal detectors at important stations on the Central line
- Railway police to acquire 4 bomb detection squads and 444 metal detectors
Additionally, the Maharashtra police will also assist the GRP personnel to foil any terror plot on the suburban local network that ferries over seven million commuters daily.
Joint Commissione of Police, KL Prasad said, "We are helping the Railway Police whenever required."
Mumbai's B E S T bus service that carries 13 lakh commuters daily, too, has decided to speed up installation of CCTV cameras in its fleet. 350 buses have already been wired and another 1000 buses would be fitted with cameras over the next month.
"We have put CCTV cameras in the buses, we also check the buses once they come to the depot,” says GM, BEST, Uttam Khobragade.
While the state government is doing its best to step up surveillance in the city, the question is if it’s enough to secure a crowded city like Mumbai?
