Mumbai: After 48 hours worried relatives of Indian student Minal Panchal, who was missing since the Virginia Tech University massacre on Monday, was confirmed dead late on Tuesday night.

Minal, a Masters student in Building Sciences, was in the Norris Hall of the university when the shooting took place.

Twenty-six-year-old Minal was a topper in college and her architecture entrance examination. At her home in Mumbai, her friends and neighbours are shocked at the turn of events, however, their concern now is Minal's mother, who has been in the US for the last one week.

“We have no information about her mother. She was very close to Minal. We are very worried,” Minal’s neighbour in Mumbai, Shobhana Bhivandkar said.

Unable to contact Minal's family in Virginia, worried friends had turned to the Internet where Minal's webpage on Orkut, a community portal service, is filling up with condolences from across the world.

“Just take a look at the scraps. It’s just anger that we feel now for her sudden death,” grieves Minal’s former classmate, Taher Rotiwala.

Minal's family in the United States will have to wait for at least two more days for her body as it has been held for examination by the authorities. It’s only after that that they will decide whether to bring it back to India or to cremate it in the US.
