Mumbai petrol pumps threaten stir

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Get your tanks filled up if you are in Maharashtra. Petrol pumps in the state plan to go on strike from Sunday midnight.

The Federation of All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers Association has threatened to go on an indefinite strike from Monday.

They will stop buying and stocking fuel, which means the present stocks could run out soon. This is their way to protest till their demands are met.

They said the Maharashtra government has not met their primary demand for reducing the sales tax on fuel in the state.

All petrol pump dealers barring a few company-owned outlets will remain shut from Sunday midnight.

They will be closed till a resolution is found between the association and the state government.

President of the All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers' Association Ashok Dixit however, refused to call it a strike. He said the stations will simply stop selling once they run out of petrol.

Dixit says, “Our main demand is reduction of sales tax in Maharashtra, which is highest in the country. Sunday night onwards, we have stopped buying and we will sell till our products get over. 90 per cent of the pumps will go dry by Sunday evening.”

The petrol pump dealers are primarily demanding a reduction in sales tax, reasonable profit margins for pump dealers, amendment in the marketing disciplines guidelines 2005, removal of license fee on CNG and rehabilitation of dealers affected by the Maharashtra Rent Control Act.

But the state government has invoked the essential services maintenance act to prevent their agitation.
