Mumbai: With Mumbai's tryst with power cuts becoming an inevitable reality, conserving this precious resource has now become every Mumbaikar's responsibility rather than a requirement.
And taking a cue from this is Vikram Patwardhan, who is the owner of an event management company. Aware of the looming power crisis, he is keeping the usage of electrical appliances in his office to a bare minimum.
“The AC is not being used even in this heat. I have instructed my staff to switch off computers when not in use,” says Patwardhan.
Patwardhan also saves power at home by switching off the heater and TV sets to keep the electricity bills in check.
With no immediate solution to its power crisis, the message for Mumbaikars now is save as much as they can.
And power companies seem to be taking a leaf out of the conservation book by putting the onus on every Mumbaikar like Vikram, who feels keeping generators at his next event is a more bankable option.
"Reduce consumption of electricity where it’s a luxury. Use where it’s a necessity,” says Patwardhan.
With neighbouring suburbs like Thane and Kalyan using solar panels and inverters as the next best alternatives, Mumbai could well be on its way to learning a few powerful lessons from its suburbs.
