Mumbai: Trains were the first services to be affected by the onslaught of heavy rains that lashed Mumbai on Wednesday.

None of the commuters were expecting early showers or train delays.

A resident of Virar, Nooruddin Shaikh had resigned himself to stay at a spare shelter on the station with his family.

"Will have to spend the night here itself if we don't get a taxi " Nooruddin said.

In the meantime as the intensity of the rains decreased, local train schedules limped back to normal by nightfall.

But for those travelling long distance, it was a long wait even when the showers decreased.

At the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Central Railway trains were finally back on schedule.

But the worst affected was the Konkan Railway and hundreds of people had spent over 12 hours waiting for their train at the Kurla Terminus and it seems like a never-ending wait for travellers since some parts of the Konkan region have received almost 25 inches of rain.

Railway officials have said trains would remain at a standstill till heavy rains in the Konkan belt stopped.
