Top cop's callous statements angers Mumbaikars

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Mumbaikars have reacted very strongly to the molestation of two girls by a group of New Year revellers outside a prominent Mumbai hotel on Monday and an unsympathetic police.

"These people should be beaten publicly," an angry lady said.

"They should be flogged like they do in Saudi Arabia," a middle aged man suggested while another wanted the molesters to be handed over to the public.

The Mumbaikars are angry about the way a mob molested the two girls. But what's making them angrier are the callous statements by the Commissioner of Mumbai Police DN Jadhav.

"You have kept your wife at home, right? That means safety my dear friend," Jadhav casually remarked when asked if Mumbai was safe for women.

And it was not all. Jadhav also dismissed the incident that happens everywhere.

"This is to be treated as one of the offences that happens in any society. That's all. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill. This could happen right here also, right here," he said.

Maybe the commissioner had not seen the photographs, which clearly show that the mob almost stripped the two girls.

However, there are others who aren't taking the incident so lightly.

Advertising guru Alyque Padamsee reacted angrily to Jadhav's remarks.

"It's very easy to say the media is blowing this out of proportion and that there are many other incidents, but Mr Commissioner Sir first take care of this one. Make sure the victims of this one get justice," Padamsee demanded.

Human Rights lawyer Flavia Agnes, too, advised the police to act quickly.

"It is a fact that such incidents are taking place in the city and it is the duty of the police commissioner to apologise that there was a lapse in police protection," Agnes said.

"They have a drive against drunken driving, why can't they have a drive against eve-teasing?" she asked.

Even figures show that Mumbai is no longer safe for women.

In 2006, police registered 107 cases of rape while the figure was 117 in 2007, which means that there was one rape every three days.

Other crimes against women too have gone up from 964 in 2006 to a 1011 in 2007.

And if the police continue to act unsympathetic, the figures could climb higher in 2008.
