Mumbai reels under milk misery

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Sewaiyaan might be just a little more expensive for this year’s Eid in Mumbai because the milk suppliers have gone on strike demanding a hike in milk prices.

“We have been selling milk at rock bottom prices. For 15 years they have been exploiting. But not more,” says a farmer Narayan Surve.

The spirit of the suppliers is so combative that on Monday, instead of selling the milk to the dairies, they gave it away for free to the villagers.

But the question is will this lead to a crisis in Mumbai?

"There is no shortage right now, but by tomorrow we could face some shortage,” says Owner, Thote Milk Centre, Anil Baburao Thote.

Mumbai consumes around 40 lac litres of milk everyday, and during festivals the demand goes upto 50 lac litres.

The farmers in the suburbs supply at least 35 per cent of the demand. They say that while the government buys the milk from them at Rs 14 per litre, it's sold in the market for Rs 22 rupees per litre.

However, now they want a share of the profit of the hike on the cost price.

The dairy owners have made it clear that only the government can offer a solution. Until then Mumbai may have to look for other options.
