Mumbai: The students of a school in Mumbai have found a better way of staying rooted to the wonders of Ayurveda.
“Lochnera - its Ayurvedic name is Sadabahar. It's of two types - one which has a white flower. The white flowers' roots are used to make Cancer drugs,” says a student of Army School, Surabhi.
Much like the rest of her friends, Surbhi is brimming with fresh knowledge about the plants grown at the herbal garden in the Army School in South Mumbai.
At the school students are taught the medicinal properties of several species of plants as part of their curriculum - the fun outdoor way. Hiral and her friend discovered instant skin care with Aloe Vera.
“Your skin becomes soft. You get the natural softness into your skin,” says Hiral.
This has taken learning plant life and its biodiversity to a whole new experiential level making it that much more purposeful.
“Instead of going to the doctors they can use these remedies,” says Principal, Army School, Anusree Ghose.
Time tested and traditional that these remedies are, they're a quick fix for many common ailments.
Tanmay swears by the leaves of the Vitex plant - a perfect prescription for that obstinate cold.
“You should continuously inhale the vapors at a break of one minute. It acts as anti-inflammatory,” he says.
The students don’t mind that some of the names are quite a mouthful.
“Phyllanthus and the Ayurvedic name is Bhumyapalika,” says another student, Akanksha.
