Mumbai: Mumbaikars are greeted with an unbearable din every day on the roads but April 7 may just be a bit different.

Posters put up all over town are boldly asking Mumbaikars to do something they have never done before – tone down their blaring horns.

“We thought that instead of penalizing them for it, let us try and create some awareness, use some innovative ideas,” said DCP (Traffic) Harish Baijal.

Hence, an official No Honking Day on Monday.

However, the number of opinions on the matter is perhaps equal to the number of vehicles creating this cacophony: “When there is traffic, we have to use horns”, “It’s a very good initiative”, “We can't drive without honking”, “Everyone is in the habit of honking”.

But the traffic police hope that the city will at least listen to its beloved film stars.

“I think that everyday should be a No Honking day. If someone has to honk, he should honk honk next to his own ear,” said actor Jackie Shroff.

One can only hope it works.
