Mumbai: What is slim, sexy, and giving sleepless nights to 30 young students from the KJ Somaiya College of Engineering?

It's a unique piece of engineering and they call her Barracuda - a 150 cc race car they have built from scratch.

It is a cheaper version of a high performance 600 cc race car the group will be creating to enter into an international auto design competition being held in Germany early next year.

Barracuda is an interesting mix. The steering column is from a Toyota Qualis, the shock absorbers from a Pulsar, and the engine from a rickshaw.

However, the race car has definitely turned out greater than the sum of its parts.

The students had to comb through local hardware markets and put in pocket money to raise about Rs 80,000 to get the car rolling.

Says one of the students, Sujay Kawale, "What we hope to achieve through this car is to get some practice. We cannot afford to make mistakes in the final car. That will be a high performance vehicle."

The Barracuda is a remarkable feat for students who say they have never built anything before in their lives.

Says another student Shubhra Sinha, "The team effort was really great. Everyone came together with enthusiasm."

The final car will be sponsored by a major auto maker and will cost around Rs 12 lakh, but the Barracuda right now is getting all the attention of a first love as this group of students can't keep their hands off her.
